Get Lost in Helen Cann's Hand-Drawn Maps

I got introduced to Helen Cann's work via twitter the other day and was immediately side-tracked by her crazy detailed hand-drawn city map of Brighton (see above). It gets better, visit the map on her site and it comes complete with rollovers from both a local and personal history of all the nooks and crannies in the town's streets and avenues.

Also as immersive (and impressive) is the drawn map she did of the history of coffee houses that began in Exchange Alley (London), starting in 1652. Once again, you can rollover most anything on the map for detailed captions that are sometimes informative and sometimes quirky.

Helen's work is a beautiful nod to the analog world, as it's "...entirely hand produced, mainly in watercolour, coloured pencil, graphite and collage." I'm especially in love with this time-lapse video of her painting up Youthtopia.

You can find more of her works at: helencannfineart.com and helencann.co.uk

Member Spotlight: Alvaro Diaz-Rubio

What luck. Here I am digging around our website for someone to feature when I stumble upon the work of Alvaro Diaz-Rubio and quickly discover he's an incredible artist and illustrator from South Florida that actually studied right down the street from our studio. It's a nice coincidence when that happens.

Alvaro's art takes me back to a time of vintage comics and being 13 years old trading gnarly Garbage Pail Kids cards outside the mall's convenience store. It's clear he draws all day long and even claims he'll most likely doodle on the inside of his coffin. His illustrations have appeared in publications like the Village Voice, LA Weekly and the New Times. Help me welcome Alvaro to Doodlers Anonymous and you can always check out more of his work at his website, Operation Underwear.

For something extra special, scroll down for a great time-lapse video of Alvaro drawing a quirky rendition of his lineage.

Collaboration in Perfect Harmony

I cannot remember when or how I came across this video but I absolutely love it. I find myself coming back to watch it again and again. I have found in my own personal experience, that collaboration with other artists either works great or is a disaster. These two artists Supakitch and Koralie really pull it off flawlessly. Their work harmonizes beautifully. Everything about this video from the music for the way it is shot are perfect. The colors and the flow of the work is amazing. Such a great pairing of style.

Journey of a Tiny Explorer

Umbra is a hand drawn animation, a mix of drawing and pastel, that I came across about a year ago. It is still one of my favorites. Simple drawings with such a huge impact. The animation conveys such great emotion. I must have watched this a million times. I have a little folder in my bookmarks for links to watch when feeling a little in the dumps creatively. This video is at the top of the list. I hope you love it as much as I do.

The Beautiful Creative Process
of David Engzell

Watch this video of David Engzell's process of creating. It will make you want to race home and draw over the largest sheet of anything that you can find. I've watched this in loop over nine times now. You should too.

Killer Drawing Video by Kim Jung Gi

Putting aside the political context and content of this video you are about to watch an incredible demonstration of drawing. Kim Jung Gi makes it look easy, almost as if the lines appear before his pen ever hits the page.

Whiteboard + Marker + Doodles = Stop Motion Animation awesomeness!

It's true, whiteboard animation videos are trendy now, but they're typically used to explain complex services or somebody's political platform. Jonny Lawrence on the other hand is having a blast making them, just for the sheer fun of it. It involves tons of time, patience, storyboarding and doodle skills, but the final result is incredibly worth it.

Besides making the two animations above, Jonny is a talented concept/storyboard artist living and working in the United Kingdom.
