Finger People Among Others

There's something really fantastic happening with Tania Toronja's drawings. You might be more familiar with her flickr name, visamexicana. Either way, her work is mesmerizing. It's a little creepy at first glance but her use of vibrant colors and shapes take it to a very fun, playful level. Take a look. You won't get scared, I promise.

Just Do Do Do.

Let's all take a moment to fall in love with the work of Christopher Holloran. He is an English man based in Amsterdam and he is so good, he gives me the heebie-jeebies. He likes to imagine "things are not as they seem." Well, I would like to imagine things as they seem in his mind.

An Apple a Day...

Angermann is the maker of this clever doodle. And I had to share it because I know the majority of us (if not all of us) have an unhealthy love for hand-drawn, crazy little critters. And of course, all things Apple®.

Member Spotlight: Jim Kaufmann

I was searching for something different today and I found it in the works of Jim Kaufmann. He's technically a writer, but claims to have found the visual arts again after a long hiatus.

We couldn't agree more. Jim's art is a mash-up of acrylics and intricate pen work, with a touch of cut-and-paste collage. So many attempt this style and fall short. Jim does not. His work looks improvised and accidental but it somehow all falls into place.

August's Guest Contributor: Tom Hovey

My first experience of Tom Hovey was an interesting one, and that is exactly how I would describe his work, too. Our first few conversations included topics like John Prescott as a father figure, locking artists inside a cupboard, and how he thought I was a man. He is a self-proclaimed ink addict and describes his work as "beautifully, ugly people." We are excited to have him as our new guest contributor for the next month.

Help us welcome the often inappropriate and highly talented Tom Hovey. Get to know him better, in his own words.

We absolutely agree. It's a weird and fantastic world of characters, expressions and beautiful, colorful scenes. See for yourself »

Sunday Grins! with Mogu Takahashi

What's the coolest thing we can hold onto as we grow up? (hint: it's not anything to do with 'mint condition' or Ebay) ... it's creative joy! Making marks without any hesitation!

And that's why I am heaps smitten over Tokyo artist Mogu Takahashi!

I've heard people try to be mean about a drawing by saying 'Pff, I could have done that when I was like, three years old!'. But I think this is the biggest compliment! No-one makes happy marks like a three year old with a crayon can. But Mogu does it with the motor skills of a grown-up to boot!

Her happy little characters pop up on everything from handmade dog food jars, to funny little stuffed toys, even mandarins! Ha! There's always a good time to be had on her Flickr page or in her cute Etsy shop... and you'll want to take a peek at her very nice scrapbooks too.

But first!... Get happy with the five doodles that Mogu drew just for us. If ever Sunday Grins was an appropriate name for this Q&A, it is today!
