Doodle on Cotton

For far too long, my to-do list looked something like this:

1. Something important
2. Something else fairly important
3. Something I didn't finish yesterday
4. Doodle on my DA shirt

I can finally take that bottom task off of my list.

It was a few hours of mindless fun and somewhat therapeutic and I encourage you all to take some time off (because we all need it) to do the same. My tools of choice? A black marker, a needle and some red thread.

We love the submissions we've gotten so far and also love how your individual styles and personalities come through in each t-shirt. We look forward to seeing more of them and sharing them with all of you.

Games and Exercises

We've all been somewhat busy working on our individual projects. But last Friday, we decided to get ourselves back into the groove of things, DA style. We put on some Stereo Mood (tip: always pick "happy." Even if you're not, you will be after just a few songs), pulled out whatever markers we had lying around (in this case, we had sharpies and good old-fashioned Crayolas) and went to town on a garage door that looked way too bare for our tastes.

Moral of the story: There is none. But that's what doodling is all about - no thinking involved, just drawing.

Here are a few photos of the improvised fun. This is just the beginning. Our intention now is to finish it, with tons of color and not an inch left unmarked.

20 by 40

I'm a sucker for paint on walls. So when I opened my email just now and caught a glimpse of Matt Scobey's recent project where he transformed a quick doodle into a 20x40 foot mural, well, I just had to share it. Click for more process pics and the final look.

Release Your Inner Child

Okay, if you don't smile when you look at Willem Lagerwaard's stuff, you better go to the doctor and get your smiley glands checked out. There is something so refreshingly innocent and heart warming about his characters and little scenes. I'm guessing he is in the children's market. Just a wild hunch.

'Till Death Do Us Part

Two completely different styles all under one roof. Get some love from Pete and Jo, whose website simply states: We are married and also we are illustrators!

A Doodler's Doodler

First off. Thanks DA for having having me for February, and OKAT for the really swell things you said. I will try my best to make this icy cold month all warm and bubbly on our insides.

Okay now to business. Maura Cluthe (aka: Fragmented) was easily the first artist that came to my mind to feature here. The first time I saw her stuff I was blown away. I instantly felt a kindred spirit and connection. She reluctantly agreed after much prodding (just kidding). Maybe it was the robots and monsters, or her eye grabbing textures or was it the hyperdoodles (as she calls them) or her expert design sense. I'm going to say it is all of that and more! Maura is the complete package. She just finished up a children's book titled It's Not Easy Being Brave that I can't wait to get my hands on. There are prints available at her online shop. Yay Maura!

As It Should Be

We create things because we feel things. I had the above line floating around in my head so I came home and made the above. I've been told many times I feel things too intensely. I don't think at all that it's a bad thing and I hope some of you might agree.

So Many Lines

Today's inspiration comes from Oatmeal's flickr because I absolutely love hand drawn hair. And lots of it. Zoom in »

Sweet

Got this neat little doodle in my email the other night. It comes from Kristen Caston, a talented designer/illustrator currently working out of Chicago. Visit her site, click around, but don't leave without seeing her work under the "experiment/personal" tab. Thanks Kristen, stay in touch.

Little-Known

I was browsing flickr when I saw the thumbnail of fergville's doodle of a crow. I clicked on his photostream and to my disappointment, the above two images were his only doodles. He works for an airline company but I think it's fair to say that he should quit his day job.
