That's Okat. You may know him as the founder of Doodlers Anonymous. His dark disheveled hair, crazy full beard, distinct eyes and nose - I love capturing it on paper. Like he said, "It's like looking in a mirror, but better."
A face says so much. Ever since I can remember, I have always loved drawing them. My most recent project has been to combine my two favorite things - face and type - to portray a person and the essence of who they are.
This is where the cool part comes in. I'm doing a giveaway. I want to draw you.
For the chance to win a 9"x12" signed, hand-drawn portrait of you, all you have to do is leave a comment below with a quote or phrase that best describes your personality. We'll pick one winner based on the quotes submitted. (This quote/phrase will be incorporated into your portrait. The winner will also have to send us a photo of themselves.)
The winner(s) have been chosen!
With over 70 comments, it was difficult to choose just one winner, so instead I chose two. Good on you. :) Congrats to Josh LaFayette ("My favorite hobby is breakfast.") and Ellie Kneeland ("...like an octopus on roller skates"). Please send over a close-up photo of you so I can see all the details of your wonderful faces.
Thanks for everyone's participation. What a fun way to get to know our members!
And keep on the lookout! We're making these hand-drawn portraits available for purchase in our shop very soon, so you can order your very own.
If I were to envision Doodlers Anonymous as a published book, it would look damn close to the one I am about to give away.
Julia Rothman is an illustrator and pattern designer who runs the popular blog Book By Its Cover, which features a different art-related book every weekday. We've been fans of the site since day one and especially love the weekly sketchbook series.
Her latest book, Drawn In, is a peek into the inspiring sketchbooks of 44 fine artists, illustrators, graphic designers, and cartoonists. It's an incredible read, filled with insightful q&a and beautiful full-color photographs of sketchbook pages that were quite possibly never meant to be seen.
We are fans not only of the content, but because it features some of our favorite artists. Of the 44, at least 10 have been featured on Doodlers Anonymous, including the amazing Ted McGrath.
Friends of DA, we are giving this great book away. To be in the running, just leave a comment with the title of a book you bought because of its cover. We'll pick a winner from the hat. Comments close June 15th (Wednesday) at 2pm Eastern. Good luck everyone;...and for those of you that can't wait, get your hands on the book today. It deserves to be on your coffee table.
And the winner is: Robyn Wells. Congrats!
Let's face it. We at DA are major suckers for hair drawings, simply because of the nature of them; the intricate and delicate line work that takes up so much patience and time. And of course, because they look amazing. Maria Gil Ulldemolins creates these kinds of drawings and we absolutely love them. And what's even better is that Maria's offered to give away two of her tote bags with these beautiful illustrations on them.
Just leave a comment to be in the running. You have until Friday (October 22nd @ 3pm EST) and we'll randomly pick TWO lucky winners. Good luck!
105 comments and 2 names randomly drawn. Congrats to Jenni Sparks and La Cuenta Cuentos and of course thank you all for participating. For those of you interested in the beautiful work of Maria Gil Ulldemolins, you can always visit her Etsy shop to get your hands on her goodies.
Of the 54 names, we randomly pulled two. Congratulations to Cheryl Smith and Julia Smelansky, both of whom are doodle addicts themselves (credit the above images to them). Your books are on the way. To everyone else, cross your fingers there's another print run.
Remember when I invited you all to jump aboard my scribble train for a BIG doodling collaboration? Well, toot toot... our colouring book has arrived!
It's a whooping 76 pages long and brimming with the wildest, loveliest, strangest passengers you could ever imagine sitting next to on a train. If you missed out on submitting a doodle, no big deal. You can still collaborate with us by splashing the scribble train with a custom paint job!
The first print run has sold out... but of course, I put two books aside for our DA readers! Would you like to nab yourself one?Read on for GIVEAWAY details » Read More »
Sorry for the announcement delay folks, most of us here at DA were on vacation last week. You gotta do what you gotta do. :)
The good news is Miss Thereza Rowe has done the draw for her giveaway and picked two winners. Congratulations and high fives go out to: Alex and Tigz Rice.
Thank you for all who participated. And thank you again Thereza for being an all-around awesome person and contributor here at DA. We have thoroughly enjoyed your stay here. Come back and visit us often!
As my guest blogging here comes to the end of its happy cycle, I cannot believe how fast this month went by and how much fun it’s been posting for you DA readers. I feel lucky and glad to have been so warmly welcomed by the DA family and as a token of my gratitude, as Papa (above) suggested to me, a giveaway would be most suiting to celebrate the good times I’ve had 'round here and to thank you all for the love, generous feedback and endless bubbles of inspiration.
So speaking of families, a while back I was delighted to be invited by the super talented Estibaliz Hernandez to design a set of four cards along with another seven international artists to form the ‘We are a happy family’ children’s card game. It was such a great project to be involved in, I enjoyed the process so much and the end result is truly fabulous.Read on for giveaway details »
