Tumblr of the Week:
Everything is Vibrating

I could stare forever at all the little details on Jon Carling's intricately shaded sketches. His many drawings of original creatures tap directly into my love for folklore, and I get carried away imagining what the mythology behind them would be. Carling also has a couple of whimsical yet haunting animated shorts (watch the videos after the fold) that are def worth taking a look at. See more »

Wonderfully Charming Drawn GIFs

I've had this in my bookmarks to share for a while, and I truly regret not posting about it earlier. It's a beautiful collection of animated GIFs made with the soft lines from colored pencils. The clips themselves are these fantastically awkward loops of people doing common things. Check out the Tumblr site, I guarantee you'll fall for this project by Thoka Maer.

Tumblr of the Week: Emmi-Riikka Vartiainen

This week's Tumblr is Emmi-Riikka Vartiainen, an illustrator from Finland, whose Tumblr is filled with woodland creatures and Japanese school girls. Her drawings remind me of the fairy tale picture books and anime shows of my childhood - a time when everything was simpler.

Tumblr of the Week: Samer Dudels

Abel Jiménez from Spain has been working his magic pen to create these fantastic and fun doodles of Summer fun. My favorite are the ones interacting with colored construction paper. Follow along at his tumblr for plenty more.

Tumblr of the Week: Dirty Library

The drawing team of Mary and Peter are turning our favorite childhood books into sexed up parodies, by re-imagining the illustrated covers of classics, from Dr. Seuss to Shel Silverstein. Visit Dirty Library and I'm certain your bedtime stories will never be the same.

Over 34,000 Doodles Live On Our
DA Flickr Group!

I'm absolutely awe-struck by the sheer size of the Doodlers Anonymous group that lives on Flickr. Launched in November 2008, the group now houses over 34,000 drawings, doodles, sketches, scribbles, paintings and so much more.

It's a treasure of inspiration.

We do our best to consistently moderate the group and dig around for awesome finds. Images above by Jeannine Ortiz, Mary Ruth Patchin, Maura Cluthe and below are some more favorites. If you're a friend of DA, you'd be crazy not to join the group… You simply never know when you might just find your art featured here on the blog.

Eyewitness to Space:
Over 1,500 drawings chronicling the American Space Program

I made a styrofoam solar system in 4th grade; I've seen Star Wars. But, it wasn’t until a recent visit to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center that I gave the final frontier much thought.

I meandered through the rocket garden, the Hubble telescope display, and the recreated control room of the ‘50s with its ashtrays and white-collared men calculating in a room of blinking lights. I saw the Falcon 9 launch light up the dark sky en route to the International Space Station. And the elusive concept of space began to take hold. I imagined and contemplated.

And since that visit, I force myself to realize that even on sunny days, irrespective of warm blues and greens, we are floating in silent blackness. These images are part of the Smithsonian’s immense collection of drawings, paintings, and prints chronicling the American space program. Enjoy them, for they, and all our accomplishments, truly are far out!
