Horror and history, archeology and architecture, prehistoric and pre-revolutionary. These are contrasting themes in Ivan Belikov’s “Home is for the Heartless” series of sketchbook illustrations. I never thought these subjects would go well together (mostly because such an oddly specific combination wouldn’t cross my mind), but his two-page spreads make it work! The materials are limited to classic pencil and paper, with an occasional single line of red pen. Belikov’s graphics are highly detailed and realistic, yet the shading is left unblended so you can see each stroke of pencil. Fans of design and fans of disaster will both find something to love in these drawings.
