Professional Illustrator Collaborates with 4-Year-Old | Doodlers Anonymous

Disclaimer: This has been all over the internet this weekend. I originally discovered it from a tweet by Anthony (@nedroid) yesterday, but have since seen it posted everywhere from The Verge to This Is Colossal. It's simply too good to pass up and definitely one of my favorite things I've seen this year.

Professional illustrator Mica Angela Hendricks (aka busymockingbird) is really good at what she does, one of them being drawing retro, vintage heads. Recently, she's upped her game by collaborating with a special someone -- her 4 year old daughter.

It started innocently enough with her daughter sneaking in some lines and scribbles to create bodies for the faces.

"Not surprisingly, I LOVED what she drew. I had drawn a woman’s face, and she had turned her into a dinosaur-woman. It was beautiful, it was carefree, and for as much as I don’t like to share, I LOVED what she had created. Flipping through my sketchbook, I found another doodle of a face I had not yet finished. She drew a body on it, too, and I was enthralled. It was such a beautiful combination of my style and hers. And she LOVED being a part of it. She never hesitated in her intent. She wasn’t tentative. She was insistent and confident that she would of course improve any illustration I might have done. …And the thing is, she DID."

Later, Mica would use her talents to go back and add color, paint and details to bring the improvised collaboration to life. The results are jaw-dropping. I still can't get over how well their two talents mesh together. Read her original post that details the entire process and if you'd like, she's even put up a bunch of the final prints for sale at Society6.

  6. what a wonderful collaborative spirit & such a great display of unadulterated play!

  7. As Picasso once said,\" oh, to draw like a child!\" The honesty , scale, attention to detail shows the child\'s natural ability and her sense of complete freedom. The combination technique is genius .\r\nI doodle with vegetables in 3-d. I use my materials in an honest way to let the essence emerge , and most of all, the humor has to shine through. If you get a chance!

  8. People heads on animals and animal heads on people is a hilarious idea. Doesn\'t get old. Simple + elaborate gives it a particularly strong aesthetic.

  9. Nice idea.

  10. This is brilliant, one of the most interesting things I have seen in ages.
