Last month, I was in New York for the day and found myself browsing through the books at Anthropologie. As usual, I briefly glanced through the clothes (don’t get me wrong, I do love clothes), but then I would stop and flip through every single book I found in front of me.
The book, “More Than Words: Illustrated Letters From The Smithsonian’s Archive of American Art” by Liza Kirwin was a gem of a find. The right words will always find its way to someone but when these words are accompanied by a doodle or drawing….
Sigh. So much greater.
I urge you to get this book. It is a beautiful compilation of personal letters by some of the most revered artists, each one decorated with an intimate illustration. Together with their words, they become autobiographical works of art revealing the joys and successes, loves and longings, disappointments and frustrations of their authors’ lives.
