When I stare long enough at a drawing I love, I start to imagine it moving. Nancy Liang is one step ahead, she has already done it for me. I’m lost in her mysteriously moody series of animated gifs. She makes tons of them! The balance between motion and stillness creates an atmosphere the way a single frame on its own wouldn’t. The swaying trees, shifting shadows, and blinking lights fit so naturally, I feel they’re something I would have envisioned anyway if I saw a still drawing of her lonely scenes.
