Showcase #21

Bookmark Doodles Rd. 2

At Doodlers Anonymous we love books. We love the texture, ink, and creases of the printed word — the tactile deliciousness of thumbing, highlighting and devouring pages. We love books that weigh heavy in our hands.

This showcase challenge is a tribute to traditional paper books and the act of reading. The two winners of this challenge (yes, there will be two!) will have their artwork fashioned into DA bookmarks. We challenge you to doodle the front-side of a bookmark, and we'll use the back to promote and credit you.

Submission Guidelines

  • There's no specific theme, although keeping it book or reading relevant is encouraged. We're just looking for some delicious art and something you'll be proud of.
  • As always, we champion the hand-drawn, but due to the nature of this showcase, we anticipate the use of graphic software to apply the image to our template.
  • Feel free to use color.
  • To be accepted, all submissions MUST be mocked up on the template provided and uploaded as a JPG image (no larger than 2MB).
  • Upload your best, because you only get one submission.
  • All participants MUST save the hi-resolution version of their artwork. The winners will be provided with final specifications for the preparation and production of the print.

DEADLINE: THURSDAY, JANUARY 23rd (11:00am EST)

Prize

Two winners from Showcase #21 will have their artwork brought to life and printed as 250 bookmarks.

Each winner will receive 25 of their own bookmark, full credit and promoted to all fans and friends of DA, plus we plan on giving the remaining bookmarks away to anyone that buys something in our shop. Good luck!

And the winners are...

""To read is not a terribly uplifting affair..." The ambiguities of my drawings permitted multiple readings, from the critical to the complicit. While my works are abstract (horizontal en vertical lines), my artistry holds greater affinity with the creativity of something like a surveillance camera ; a being affected by its ever possible documentation, a sort of techno-occasionalism, made in koh-i-noor 8B on 160 gr of bristol (often 81 x 61 cm but don’t ask me why…). My drawings are documents of the real that reflects on what this reality may be, and how it might be changed, through the artist’s practice and the very (slow) process of making."

@JOANNA KLEAVER: Actually, the team here at DA, myself included, pick the final two winners that get printed. The voting only narrows down the selection for us so we can pick from the top 10.

Also, this is meant as a fun drawing challenge and exercise. Winners don't get paid and we don't sell these bookmarks. We give them away to our fans, so the selected artists can get some exposure. Relax, and have some fun.

Joanna Kleaver
Joanna Kleaver Posted Jan 23, 2014
@ OKAT.

I know the votes do not pick the winner.... and you state on this page you pick the winner out of the top 5 best voted. Now you are telling me you are picking them out of the top 10 voted. So which is it? Just to be clear....

And if this is not about the votes.. then why bother picking out of the top any... why don't you pick the best out of all of them? As we all know online voting can be manipulated.

Chilli Palmer
Chilli Palmer Posted Jan 23, 2014
And for the record, I am not trying to cause problems, but I know some of these artists and they are taking this way too seriously. Spreading things out on every social network they have. Just saying... just some of the artists here that may in some people's mind be better artists, but not as popular on social member do not get an equal chance. I just don't like seeing underdogs not have an equal chance.

If you know artists well, you know they are very competitive.

Joanna Kleaver
Joanna Kleaver Posted Jan 23, 2014
Looks like I started something, sorry, now I got my friend Chilli involved. I told him not to. Just so you know, there is some discussion about this whole thing on an artists facebook. That is causing some discussion. I didn't mean to cause issue. We just want the best artist to win fairly.
I'll make sure these comments stop.

okat
okat Posted Jan 23, 2014
@JOANNA CLEAVER: I appreciate the discussion and feedback, but removing voting wouldn't necessarily solve much. If I selected the winner on my own, who is to say it's the one you and your friends consider the "best artist"? I think our solution is the best middle ground... Have the community narrow down their favorites, and the staff at DA takes it from there.

@EVERYONE: Thank you all for participating. This is an impressive collection of bookmarks. Now let's all go read a book ;)

@JOANNA KLEAVER If you participate in a contest, is normal that you will let people know. I think it's a form of discrimination judging an artist because has more or less followers. Those artists are working for it.

This strange way of think like if your are a popular artist you are not good enough, is discrimination and it looks like a troll campaign.

Let's all read Cinderella again, illustrated by Marcia Brown (very beautiful!)
