Tumblr of the Week: Amy

We came across this week's tumblr while reading some fanmail we received from Aimee Kinsey, a 17 year old art student in England. What attracts me to Aimee's art is the grungy, collage-y elements, reminiscent of found art. My favorite part about her style is that she isn't restricted by having to stay within the paper she's using, sometimes cutting holes in it to show odds and ends lying underneath. It's fun to see artists unafraid to add dimensions to their paper and create layers with their sketches! Follow her along at aimeedanielle.tumblr.com and encourage her to keep doing what she's doing.

Tumblr of the Week: Scribblings

Is there a name for that feeling of wishing you could jump into an art piece? I'm feeling it right now as I scroll through maruti-bitamin's Tumblr. I'd love to step into the shoes of the serene kids she draws and explore her watercolor world, touch and smell the strange flowers growing out of me, and play with the fantastical critters all around the dream-like environment.

Tumblr of the Week: Dany Reede

I'm not 100% sure what's going onů but I definitely like it. I doubt that trying to make sense of the chaos is what I'm supposed to be doing, so I'm just going to go with the flow and enjoy the frenzy of symbols and text and colors in the drawings on Dany Reede's tumblr.

Tumblr of the Week: Mangun

It's interesting how we can immediately identify a person's face in drawings, even when, upon closer inspection, they barely contain any characteristics of real humans. Indonesian artist Popo Mangun's black and white drawings are an example of this mental habit. His tumblr is a gallery of strange portraits, whose geometric shapes are reminiscent of ancient tribal masks.

Tumblr of the Week:
Everything is Vibrating

I could stare forever at all the little details on Jon Carling's intricately shaded sketches. His many drawings of original creatures tap directly into my love for folklore, and I get carried away imagining what the mythology behind them would be. Carling also has a couple of whimsical yet haunting animated shorts (watch the videos after the fold) that are def worth taking a look at. See more ╗

Wonderfully Charming Drawn GIFs

I've had this in my bookmarks to share for a while, and I truly regret not posting about it earlier. It's a beautiful collection of animated GIFs made with the soft lines from colored pencils. The clips themselves are these fantastically awkward loops of people doing common things. Check out the Tumblr site, I guarantee you'll fall for this project by Thoka Maer.

Tumblr of the Week: Emmi-Riikka Vartiainen

This week's Tumblr is Emmi-Riikka Vartiainen, an illustrator from Finland, whose Tumblr is filled with woodland creatures and Japanese school girls. Her drawings remind me of the fairy tale picture books and anime shows of my childhood - a time when everything was simpler.
