Tumblr of the Week: merwilson

You know that feeling when you are standing in a stranger’s house for the first time? Meredith Wilson’s art is making me think about it. The places and people seem personal to the artist, scenes from specific memories for her. I’m the stranger in her house that’s not as comfortable as she is. I’m unfamiliar, but interested in the many oddly particular details ensconced within her simple drawings. See more »

Tumblr of the Week: Sketchbooking with Fashion and Geometry

Fatma Al-Remaihi loves to draw babes. I have a crush on every one in her sketchbook. There's something so alluring about the consistent pastel color palette over sharp blue ink, which really makes the accessories they wear POP. I can't look away from her stylish boys and girls, drawn with highly detailed faces and dressed in abstract blocks of color. The balance between styles is hypnotic. She makes pretty cool animated gifs too. Read on »

Tumblr of the Week: Juliana Vomero

A wild deer-girl appears! She crossed my path today while I was browsing our followers on DA's tumblr and landed on the blog of Juliana Vomero. I instantly loved the way Juliana's drawings are unconstrained - you see them in sketchbooks on desks, on kitchen cutting boards, on the walls inside, on the walls outside! Something mysterious about it are the repeated images of the same character. There is little information given about Juliana or her art, which leaves me wondering what this pin-up deer-girl means to her.

Needles and Doodles (Noodles?!)

In case my Making Monsters entry didn't make it obvious, I'll say it: I'm really into seeing doodles come off the page. Sometimes doodling can be a gateway drug to other arty addictions. For example, Robin Amy Darling makes embroidery based on her doodles!

Robin says it's "time consuming, labour intensive and considered old fashioned, but extraordinary things can be achieved with a needle and thread." You can see proof that she's 100% right on her tumblr!

Tumblr of the Week: Making a Mess

The gem I found while browsing our tumblr followers this week is the blog of Gavin Ashworth, a student in New Zealand. His messy collaged doodles are made on found paper (some sheets look like school papers), sometimes incorporating unexpected materials like wood and melted plastic. It's a dirty, damaged mishmash that looks disgusting and awesome at the same time.

Tumblr of the Week: Renée Louise Anderson

If you haven't noticed by now, we loooove looking at pics of sketchbooks. Scans are nice for appreciating the smaller details better, but there's something about the spontaneity of taking a photo the moment you finish drawing. Renée Louise Anderson takes some of the most visually appealing pictures of her doodles. It's nothing extravagant, no insane filters… Just a soothing simplicity in composition that makes you want to stare at the page (or leaf) a little longer. Just look at them so you can see what I mean, and don't forget to follow Renée's blog.

Tumblr of the Week: DERIK

How excited would you be if you were out for a walk and came across these guys eying you through a window? My favorite thing about these vibrant characters is how they bring life and humor to the otherwise colorless places they are found in. It's fun to see artists getting creative with the environment beyond their pens and paper. I'm lucky that DERIK happens to follow the DA tumblr so that I could have the chance to stumble onto his blog. Street artists like him make the world a more magical place full of colorful surprises around unexpected corners!
