Sketchbooks with Infinite Detail

I don't have a patient hand when it comes to drawing. I tend to move the pen quickly and skip the details. My perspective is off, my lines are crooked and the drawing is typically made on something ephemeral, like a random scrap of something. And then I move on.

The sketchbook of Mattias Adolfsson is the opposite of mine in every which way. There's tons of detail, patient lines, and incredible depth and perspective. I'm still trying to wrap my head around how this is all done within the confines of a Moleskine sketchbook. Below is a selection of my favorite and it goes without saying that you should visit his site and see them in even greater detail.

September's Guest Contributor:
Lee Crutchley

You know him as the author of Quoteskine, a book of drawn quotes, lyrics and clever word play, and for the month of September you'll know him as our blog's guest contributor.

Lee is an up and coming illustrator in the UK that's tirelessly working to "make it" as a freelancer. He runs an incredibly beloved tumblr blog, but plans to step a bit out of that role this month to post on Doodlers Anonymous about the people and things that inspire him.

You can stalk him on twitter, visit him at leecrutchley.co.uk or simply welcome him to the site in the comments below.

All The Pretty Ladies

One of my first true loves was Wendy, a run-down all-blue Nissan (Datsun) Stanza. Some of my most memorable stories (from my teenage years) could be traced back to my old "deep blue" and I couldn't help but reminisce while looking at the "Ladies" set of illustrated cars by France Belleville-Van Stone. It's easy to see why: Most of the watercolor drawings reveal the innate character and age of each vehicle, with strokes that feel almost like wrinkles on a person.

I wonder what Wendy looks like now. Is she just scrap at a junk yard? Or is she, even with all her imperfections, someone else's first true love.

White With Fear

These are not doodles, they are life like character drawings found in Chamo San's moleskine and I cannot stop looking at them. Each one seems to tell of a moment in time with no beginning or end, just a middle. And take note of the white marks, what perfect subtlety.

Giveaway: Quoteskine, Vol. 1

A book of quotes, lyrics and clever drawings on the topics we all love to hate or hate that we love. Lee Crutchley makes drawing fun again and we've got 144 pages to prove it.

Lee is a doodler, and he's been one since the age of 14. He's been posting drawn words on his tumblr blog for the past couple years and many of us have turned fans of the quirky, often comical and very relevant sharpie scribbles. Now they've been published into a book and we've got a signed copy for one of you to keep.

To play along, leave a comment below with your favorite quote from a movie (don't forget to also credit the film). We'll collect them all into a hat and pull one lucky winner. Comment by Thursday, January 5th and we'll announce the winner the next day.

Tattoo Parlour

I just got an email of Cristina Guitan's latest projects and I couldn't resist posting this one. Tattoo Parlour was part of a Friday Late event at the V&A Museum, where she was asked to draw impermanent tattoos on visitor's bodies alongside illustration buddies Elvia Vasconcelos, Gerda Razmaite and Nick Alston.

How ridiculously fun must that have been. Cheers to one day getting all DA members into a room with nothing but markers and pens and of course a required dress code of sleeveless shirts.

Related: An old post from July 2009 titled Body Doodle, and if you need a reminder, a link to Cristina's previous mention on DA: The Structure of the Universe.

Great Heights

Comic-style storylines, fine architectural detail, and precise drafting. I could get lost in the graphic and textual layers. I'm enamoured. Take a gander at Timothy J. Reynolds's Moleskins and you will be too.
