Beyond the Classroom Walls

Zak Peric, an instructor at Tower Hamlets College in London, put together an outstanding doodle project with his students. Over the course of three days, 11 students doodled on the wall of their college.

Using only black ink, students drew shapes, characters, objects, and lines all around the encouraging and positive words: "The difference between who you are and who you want to be is what you do!"

Kudos to Zak for making this happen! Long live teachers and instructors that encourage the arts beyond just the walls of their classroom. Watch it all come to life in the time-lapse video below.

Making the Grade

Israel is inspiring: the history and culture, the sand and sea, the light and grace. Bezalel, the Jerusalem-based Academy of Art & Design, has cultivated a bounty of talented and progressive artists across the disciplines. Because Iím aware of Bezalelís reputation, I expect a certain caliber of work from its students. But I was, admittedly, sucker punched. Gabriella Barouchís sketchbook is mature and elegantóthe composition, the colors, the delicate patterns. Thereís innate talent, and thereís training. Clearly Gabriella was blessed with both. Hard to believe she still has a year left of school.

Fresh Outta Art School

What do I fancy about Katie Turner? She draws in her sleep. Well, she probably doesn't actually make marks while sleeping. But she seems like the sort of young illustrator who would often fall asleep with pencil in hand.

Two weeks ago she graduated from Parsons in New York, and I can feel that still-new freshness in her illustrations. It's obvious she's been taught well about colour and composition - but I mostly like how youthful her drawings feel. There's something eager about her.
