30 Artists, 1 Monkey and An Outdoor Film Festival in The South of Italy

La Guarimba is a festival in the South of Italy that primarily exists to showcase short films and bring lots of great people together over the course of a few days, during the late Summer month of August.

Last year, illustrator (and DA friend) Sara Fratini teamed up with some dedicated folks to repair and reopen an outdoor movie theater. That was the start of La Guarimba.

This year, it looks as though the gathering will more than triple in size and possibly carry twice as many films as it did last year.

Somehow along the way a monkey became their mascot and to help promote the event, Sara asked 30 illustrators to design a poster (in their regions language) to be exhibited during the event. I'm happy to be included as one of the invited artists and really just love the way we each interpreted the poster in our own unique style.

Above is a glimpse into a few of my favorites, but you can catch the entire gallery (and their respective credits) on their Facebook page.

She Will Not Rest

I want the passion and commitment of Sarah Watts. She has an obsession with illustration and swears that she'll do it forever or at least "until a shark eats her." It's obvious in her work how much she's done, on her website you'll find tons of illustrations created for posters, books and patterns (with and without drawn type). It's just endless really.

A former graduate of Ringling College of Art and Design, she spent years creating children images for a living, and then finally left the corporate world to pursue a full-time career as an independent illustrator. She illustrated her first book at the age of 23 for The Tilting House written by Tom Llewelyn (above).

While plenty of her commissioned work is in beautiful, vivid color, she'll mostly begin each one with a black and white drawing. Here's a glimpse into her sketchbook.

I'm Back to Save the Universe

I can't help but love this illustration made for one of my favorite bands. The above is part of a poster created by Aldis Ozolins for a Radiohead concert that was printed using a woodcut, 3-layer silk screen on reeves bfk tan paper. Zoom out to see the whole thing.

The Case of the Independent Poster

The movie poster for The Pleasure of Being Robbed got my attention while I was looking at trailers for upcoming movies. Did a bit of research and discovered the company behind the movie is Red Bucket Films.

Not only did they commit to a promotional poster made up of an illustration, their own company website is doodle heaven. The entire site's content is represented through the pages of a sketch book. Impressive and fun all the same... giving us high hopes for the movie of course.
