Damien Florebert Cuypers: New York Fashion Week

While searching for the work of another artist with the same agency, I found this colorful series Damien Cuypers created from New York Fashion Week. Peering into the seemingly untouchable realm of fashion is a guilty pleasure for me. I'm thrilled when an illustrator takes on fashion in their sketches, removing the brand, the label, the money, and the model. Drawn in crayon, Cuypers' choice of medium increases the feeling of simplicity in these drawings. Still, Cuypers maintains the beauty of the clothes, the person, and the setting. He's also wonderful at capturing a moment, whether on the runway, a posed shot on a city street, or a candid moment between fashion geniuses. I can see in my mind's eye the photographs of the same scenes, and only then do I realize how much I prefer the drawn interpretations. Seeing the pieces all together they offer a bounty of bright colors, and only when you think about it do you realize there is quite a lot of gray and black in these images. In doing this, Cuypers has represented both the fashion and the city, just by choosing the right crayon.

Soft Shading, Bold Contrast

Elfandiary’s sketchbook is magic. I’ve been bewitched by the soft shading + sharp geometric cut-outs coming together to make something that is delicate and bold at the same time. Page after page of glamorous people are drawn in a style that is realistic in some parts and sketchy in others. It’s both exciting and elegant! The artist has also posted a few mesmerizing time lapse videos of their drawing process that you can see right here.

Inner Thoughts In Neon Pencil

Something eerie is happening. Ines Jakovljević's drawings are intensely personal and yet creepily inhuman. There's elements of biology textbook illustrations gone wrong, or gross-looking creatures found in the black depths of the sea. Enigmatic phrases are incorporated into the pictures, most of which sound to me like those nasty inner thoughts whispered to yourself in your head. These drawings have a bewitchingly sweet palette of vibrant neon and pastel colors, an unexpected choice for the gory visual details. I've been hooked and keep on diving deeper into Ines' color penciled inner world.

Tumblr of the Week: Miss Wearer's Rainbow POP Sketchbooks

When I was in elementary school, I had a sticker problem. I was addicted to buying rolls and packs of them and creating crazy colorful and hectic sticker collages. Seeing Miss Wearer's art brought these memories rushing back, because cotton candy rainbows and cutesy smiling creatures were exactly the kind of thing I couldn't get enough of. Her pop art is overloaded with retro palettes of bright colors that look so good you could eat them (it helps that a lot of her doodles seem to be dripping with ice cream fudge). It's no wonder her blog says "Draw what makes you smile." Miss Wearer's sharpie madness is gushing with playful sweetness and leaves you with a feel-good vibe that doesn't shake off.

Journey of a Tiny Explorer

Umbra is a hand drawn animation, a mix of drawing and pastel, that I came across about a year ago. It is still one of my favorites. Simple drawings with such a huge impact. The animation conveys such great emotion. I must have watched this a million times. I have a little folder in my bookmarks for links to watch when feeling a little in the dumps creatively. This video is at the top of the list. I hope you love it as much as I do.
