Ola Szpunar: Summer Sunlight

I recently returned from a trip to Texas where the days were unexpectedly filled with clouds, rain, and chilly temperatures. When I saw Ola Szpunar's "Summer" series, the images matched what I had thought my trip would look like: scenes of warm, sun-drenched indoor and outdoor settings. You cannot feel any other season besides summer when observing these pictures, not only from the sunny glow emanating from each scene. I see myself as the girl standing near the sink in a bikini top and black pants, coming in from the pool to take a break from the sun.

Pop Up Art

This sketchbook is so action-packed that some of the pages are literally popping out at me! Dominic Damien uses inventive combinations of ink, pencil, watercolor and acrylic meshed with comic book clippings. These elements of collage are so deftly integrated into Damien’s bold, striking art style that at first I did not realize they weren’t drawn in. Photos of his expansive moleskine art also include helpful closeups that bring a microscope up to the best details and textures that you miss while looking at the big picture.

Portraits of Nature

There are some painters who specialize in portraits and others who gravitate towards landscapes. And then there's Lindsay Stripling, with paintings that are a hypnotic cocktail of both. Seems like she is both a people person and a nature person, and can't settle on one subject. Her series of women with landscapes for faces is haunting and strangely sentimental. It comes off as a cross between yearbook photos and vacation snapshots, two things that are strongly nostalgic.

Art You Can Eat

Since the holidays are cookie season, here's something culinary-inclined doodle addicts should give a shot. I'm licking my lips just looking at these delicious doodles on gingerbread that are anything but cookie-cutter. Satu Kontinen painted flowers right onto the frosting of her freshly baked cookies. Yummmm!

You can take a look at her instagram to see more of her doodles (mostly non-edible).

Did Thumbelina Make These Ridiculously Small Paintings?

No, Lorraine Loots did. I don't think you understand how small these are. Look at the tip of your pencil RIGHT NOW and think about how minuscule these brush strokes must be. What is this, a painting for ants? Actually… that's exactly what the artist named the series. On January 1, 2013, she challenged herself to create one miniature painting every single day of the year. That's 365 coin-sized drawings in extremely high detail and she doesn't even use a magnifying glass. My eyes hurt just thinking about it.

Her Life with a Little Bit of Fiction

Paintings, drawings, words. All of it. I'm in love with Herikita's art. It speaks truths in soft colors and is quite often made-up of angled homes and rooftops, pets and insects, women and men, all of whom are sharing their awkward feelings and I just want more and more of it.

Her bio alone was enough to make me smile. Here's a small bit of my favorite part, "I work at midnight like Cinderella’s mice, almost always, when everyone is sleeping and something pops up in my mind.."

It's such a great visual.

The Fantastical and Imaginary

One look and I was immediately drawn into the fantastical and surreal world of Estela Cuadro's artwork. Her paintings seem as ink stains caught in a dreamlike state, very often the backdrop to fictional characters, animals, and plants. As she explains (in an interview over at Something You Said), "I like that my art is not exactly real, belonging completely to imaginary worlds ... I think that much of my time is spent connected to my unconscious."
