All The Pretty Ladies

One of my first true loves was Wendy, a run-down all-blue Nissan (Datsun) Stanza. Some of my most memorable stories (from my teenage years) could be traced back to my old "deep blue" and I couldn't help but reminisce while looking at the "Ladies" set of illustrated cars by France Belleville-Van Stone. It's easy to see why: Most of the watercolor drawings reveal the innate character and age of each vehicle, with strokes that feel almost like wrinkles on a person.

I wonder what Wendy looks like now. Is she just scrap at a junk yard? Or is she, even with all her imperfections, someone else's first true love.

Like a Whisper

This may not make much sense, but I find Julia's work to be so gentle. It's almost like it isn't there in front of me. Of course there is color and lines and texture, but everything is wispy, like a dream. I want to close my eyes and visit her drawings now, please don't come to get me.

And if I were you, I would visit her blog just for the header alone.

In the Thick of It

todernst/schabernack's illustrations suspend us in tension and time-- caught in a moment that is at once engaging and uncomfortable. You feel as if you're walking into the middle of a story that, like Morse Code, is hidden within the texture of meticulously-drafted dots and dashes. How different. How lovely.

Character Builder

This guy comes to us from Cape Town, South Africa. His name is Jordan Metcalf. And just by looking at his work, I can tell he is someone I would like to be friends with. Fun and playful in a sarcastic way, just like the characters he draws.

Showcase #1: The Gallery of Napkin Doodles

There are no words to describe how ecstatic we are with the outcome of Showcase One. It was a simple prompt, but it inspired so many great submissions. Over 80 napkin doodles were uploaded, giving us an amazing collection of drawings, all caught in their own moment in a slew of different colors and textures.

We thank each and every one of you for your participation. It's a testament to the doodle community and encouraging to know that we are all craving a place to celebrate our addiction of drawing on anything and everything.

Now the really fun part. You get to see them all and vote for your favorite. The best part is you don't have to pick just one. You can mark as many as you'd like. Just click the asterisk under each of the ones you love and its "fave score" will increase by one.

Voting ends Monday, 5pm Eastern.

Showcase #1: Napkin Doodle

We have good... no, scratch that. We have great news to share with you. It's something we've been working very hard to make happen on our end.

We'd like to introduce you to our new section called "Showcase."

Every couple weeks, we will challenge you to be creative and do what you love to do by doodling for us based on a theme or prompt. And then all you have to do is upload your submission into our "Showcase" section. All of our members will vote on their favorite and at the end of the challenge, the art with the most votes wins a wonderful prize by our sponsor. See more of the details here.

Our first challenge, if you choose to accept, is to doodle on something you're probably very familiar with: THE NAPKIN.

So go ahead, grab a serviette and pen away. And don't forget to upload it here.

Sunday Grins! with Gemma Correll

Today I'm happy to share an exclusive interview with miss Gemma Correll.

Her illustrations are cute and funny, and have quietly turned me into a bit of a cat lady. I asked her some silly questions and she delivered on some even sillier drawings. Gosh that girl makes me smile.

Click here to take a peek at the interview!
