Tumblr of the Week: Gourmet Scum

I really enjoy it when artists add captions or speech bubbles to their drawings of people. Maybe it stems from my love of comics or maybe the added commentary makes the experience that much better. The Tumblr of the Week today belongs to an 18 year old artist from Chicago named Meredith, who seems to be pretty heavily influenced by 80's aesthetics. Something about these marker doodles does give me flashbacks to certain old cartoons I used to watch on television. Find more of these goodies on Meredith's blog!

If you're addicted to tumbling as well as doodling, follow Doodlers Anonymous on Tumblr for even more daily inspiration. You might even see yourself on there!

Personal Space, What's That?

I love it when I discover cool stuff like this shared by fellow doodlers on the DA flickr group. This doodler does not waste paper. I feel like monocat's sketches really capture the spirit of spontaneous doodles as almost every inch of the page has something crammed into it.

Even though it may look like a mishmash of unrelated doodles, there's a cool chemistry between the colorful characters as they seem to be reacting to one another and their predicament of being squeezed together and having someone else intrude on their personal space. Enjoy them, I did.

Color Pens Gone Wild

Mossi's markers make quick, short strokes of color that run into each other to create random shapes (and sometimes faces) born from his subconscious. Look closely and you'll be staring into a trippy collection of intricate lines and patterns, making it impossible to follow, but easy to love.

Look Up and You'll Miss It

This one is for my fellow down-lookers, you know who you are! When we go for a stroll, we like to keep our chin pointed down and our gaze fixed a few inches in front of our boots. To find our way home, we look at the cracks in the pavement rather than the street signs! And we're the ones who always seem to find that stray ten-dollar bill on the sidewalk... lucky us!

Well, my fellow down-lookers, let me introduce you to a kindred doodler. Her name is Heike Weber and she's a German artist who works with the canvas under our feet. Check it out, these doodled floor installations would make even the snobbiest up-looker take a peek down!

By the way... they're all hand-drawn with markers & acrylic paint!

A Pirate's Life for Me

This music video for We Cut Corners by Kijek / Adamski is a must see. I've already watched it three times while waiting for my coffee to brew. The entire two and a half minutes was done with markers on paper, that's it! Well, that, and a whole lot of talent ;)

The Schwarzenegger Trilogy

I just found this video on Vimeo (haha, that rhymed!) by Brainbow and enjoyed it immensely. It's three short hand-drawn 1,600 frame animation composed into one. It's very simply drawn, which I absolutely love, partially colored in with highlighters.

The first video '5 4 3 2...' is a series of continuous Hollywood explosions edited into a simple beat. The second, "Galleria" is a cut from Terminator 2. And the third, which is my favorite (and starts at 2:25), is an original gangsta rap with lyrics provided by the Governator himself and arranged by Harry McGowan.

Get your headphones on. Enjoy the pops of color, fun sound effects and some of Arnold's infamous lines.

Windoodles

Garrett Miller does it again. First he rocked us with Imaginawesome (where he turned kid doodles into complete illustrations) and now he's invented a whole new form of doodling; where dry erase markers meet windows.

They are funny, they interact with their (often) scenic backgrounds and best of all, they are quick, improvised and temporary. The perfect definition of doodling.

My favorites are below, but you really should visit Windoodles to see the growing collection (he's even taking submissions).
