Showcase #2: Draw Your Line

We have another challenge for all of you and it comes with an excellent prize from the fine folks at Parka Blogs.

Close your eyes for a moment and think about your favorite book. Good. Now think about your favorite line from that book. Got it? Good. Now draw it for us all to see.

Draw it however you'd like: As drawn letters on a ripped page or as a doodled scene in your Moleskine. We encourage you to have fun and do your thing, just make sure to write out the title of the book and author somewhere in the drawing.

Good luck everyone, you have until next Wednesday at 11am Eastern to upload your submission. Read the complete guidelines and prize details here »

Member Spotlight: Matt Saunders

I don't know Matt Saunders (aka rabbit portal), but sometimes I feel like I do. I've been following him on twitter for months now and it's quite obvious how much passion and work he puts into his love of drawing. I really like that his lines are detailed and intricate and that there's an abundance of them.

Take the time to visit his flickr full of goodies, especially the animation stills, where he shows off his scribbles before they come to life.

Sunday Grins! with Mia Christopher

Yes, it's nice to find out how an illustrator got started or what tools they use. But if you'd really like to get to know a person, you should ask them this question...

When you press an unknown button, what do you hope it will do? Really, what do you hope will happen?

After you've had a think about that, take a peek at our new Q&A series - every Sunday, all hand drawn, and a little bit silly!

First up to be interviewed is the charming Mia Chirstopher. I like that her illustrations are simple and happy, like a child who's just discovered what a pencil can do. There's also something funny and curious going on behind the lines - something that I suspect could make a sterile gallery feel as comfortable as story time.

So Many Lines

Today's inspiration comes from Oatmeal's flickr because I absolutely love hand drawn hair. And lots of it. Zoom in »

Not Much Talk

This past weekend, I took a quick road trip from Miami to Birmingham and back. On our stop in Atlanta, I went into a record store and purchased the magazine Blü (No. 8) to keep me occupied in the car when I wasn't sleeping. In it, there's an interview with Pepa Prieto alongside some of her work. My favorite part of the interview is when they ask her if she has a favorite place to work - home, studio, other? Her answer: "…I travel a lot; so wherever I go I take my pens, paintings, laptop and camera. It's part of me and probably my favorite studio is where I am in that moment." See more »

It Left an Impression

This website pretty much made my day, for many reasons. Here's a little background story. I have been voicing my dissatisfaction to my friend for days now - about feeling indifferent, about how difficult it is to be in a constant state of inspiration. She sits right behind me at work. I got back from grabbing a cup of coffee and had an email sitting in my inbox from her. It was the link to this website and the words: "A little inspiration. Great music, photos, design, all in one..."
