Oh my! A Manga-inspired Handdrawn Daily Planner

What is it about artists’ diaries that I find so captivating? I used to think I love them because I am a nosy person who likes to snoop on people’s business, but I’ve just been proven wrong. I can hardly read a word from @oharu1205’s instagram account, and yet here I am—scrolling months deep into their daily planner. Last Christmas, Haru Suzuki committed to posting a photo each day of a doodle from their journal and the project is still going strong. The bubbly manga style fills me with a sense of sunshiny optimism from the drawings of what was on the artist’s mind that day. It’s a log of daily life brimming with the colorful exuberance of a doodler who thinks everyday is special, even the ones where it seems like nothing much happened have something worth jotting down and illustrating.

Japan and Mexico

I recently discovered the art of Monica Barengo when I came across some illustrations she did for the Australian Womankind magazine. These are drawings from two separate series on Mexico and Japan. The Mexican series revolves around bees and flowers, the Japanese one around cats and food. The drawings pull specific imagery from two very different cultures in mature and elegant forms, with whimsically surreal elements. The Japanese series made me so hungry, I’ll leave you to enjoy the thin lines and muted, earthy colors on your own.

Tumblr of the Week: Bela Unclecat

Our first time crossing paths with Bela Unclecat was when she sent us back one of our Doodle Addict postcards from Japan with one of the most charming and lively doodles we have received. Just look at it! How many animals can you count in the left corner alone? There is a chicken thing standing on a cat that is holding a stack of tea cups that the chicken thing is drinking out of and there is a stream of tea coming into the teacup from a teapot, suddenly we've travelled all the way to the opposite side of the picture, what a magical journey that was and we're nowhere near done seeing all the sights there are to see.

There's plenty more where that came from on Bela Unclecat's tumblr. I just can't get enough of her nostalgically playful universe.

Big in Japan

Robert Scholten takes us on a drawn journey through Japan. Flip through his sketchbook and it's as if you're riding along right beside him, in almost every form of transportation – "airplane, bus, car, train, ferry – you name it!"

It Bleeds

This new set of drawings by Rolf Schröter immediately caught my attention. Ink and watercolor mix, stain and bleed onto calligraphy paper bound in a handmade Japanese folded sketchbook. It's a visual feast, bon appetite.

A Dream of Beauty and Balance

Kumi Obata's art appeals to me the way a beautifully crafted sketch does. Her etchings are a perfect balancing act between drawn doodle looseness and sophisticated, refined art. Rich in texture, line, and pattern, her work is no doubt influenced by the quiet beauty and tradition of her home country, Japan. The first day I happened onto her site, I felt like I was transported into someone else's dream and floated around from one beautiful scene to the next, not wanting to leave. A year and a half later, I still feel the same.
