Sketching in Series

These sketchbooks are sending me on an adventure. Iím like a paleontologist unearthing gorgeous sea fossilsÖ andÖ occasionally gorgeous girls. Partly a journal of zoological specimens and partly beauty magazine, Tavo MontaŮezí meticulous black lines make it all come together so well I didnít even question it. He inked up four entire sketchbooks full of cool spreads with his out of control doodling, you can scroll through the whole series on his site or see some of our favorites below.

Human + Nature

Flowers growing out of skin. A flock of birds fluttering out from someoneís mind. Curious bears crawling over a hoodie. These drawings are connected by the common theme of humans and nature being intimately close, sometimes inseparably intertwined. Tatiana Karpova takes inspiration from real life objects or beings to insert directly onto the paper in ink, pencil or watercolor, but the finished image is something dreamy and impossible. A perfect balance of influence from humans and nature coexisting on paper.

There's Something About These Drawn Girls

There's something about these girls. They are calm and composed, not a hair out of place-except sometimes their entire head is misplaced. These black and white scenes are drawn with only pencil and pen, always in a way that is strange and creepy without ever reaching gruesome. Her girls look so peaceful in their settings that it sometimes took me a moment to notice the one surreal detail that is off about the image. Visit Virginia Mori's blog to peak into more of her unsettling world.

Inky Blue Universe

A couple of months ago I was exploring the artist alley of a comic convention here in Miami, and that's where I spotted local artist Wenjuice's booth. When I came up close to her blue pen ink doodles, I was already thinking that her drawings look spontaneous and laid back with a good dose of kooky - exactly how we like it here at DA. We chatted a bit and I ended up asking her some stuff about her art over email, so here's a quick surprise interview with Wen-Ju Chien.

Fine Lines, Mustached Men, & Rain Drops

Why are we drawn to certain styles, to specific aesthetics? Taste is a peculiar, and tenacious thing. And although I canít explain it, itís that magnetism that pulls me to the illustrations of Gabriel Huici. I counted no short of 17 umbrellas. I donít inherently love umbrellas. His line work is sparse. I donít inherently love sparse line work. But, I love his pieces. Every one. There is a touch of vaudeville; there is a touch of hipster. The fine lines are so intentional and terse they create suspense- like listening to a pregnant pause or waiting on a dangling participle.

Interstellar Drawings

I'm very much enjoying the drawings of Jason Hernandez, especially the ones themed around space travel. I love the narrative, it's as if I'm traveling between stars. The drawings generally consist of black ink on yellow paper with accents of gold paint, and the attention to detail in each image is just right. Buckle up and enjoy the cosmos.

A prolific illustrator and graphic designer from Wroclaw, Poland, Gosia makes creating these delightful abstract illustrations look so fun and easy. Visit his Behance portfolio for an endless amount of inspiration.
