Get Published

Back in 2009 I described Anorak Magazine as "the happy, colorful, illustrated, quirky, character-filled, page-turning, content-driven mag for everyone," but they simply call themselves "the happy mag for kids." Happy being the key word here, and this summer Doodlers Anonymous is going to help them spread some of that joy around.

How you ask? Anorak is committing 6 pages of their June issue to your illustrations, with each page featuring two images, so that's a total of 12 artists getting some nice attention and love from us all (not to mention a free issue of course). We have only 3 guidelines for your participation: (1) Your art must be black and white, so kids can choose to color it in (2) It must be horizontal (in other words landscape mode), so we can easily fit two on a page (3) Your illustration must be themed FAVORITE SPORTS, but of course invented and imaginary sports are welcomed too.

Deadline is April 25th. Get drawing and submit your artwork to sports{at}doodlersanonymous{dot}com. The team at Anorak and DA will pick the final selection of twelve. Good luck to everyone and follow us on Twitter or Facebook for updates along the way.

Awareness of Moment

Brian Rea is probably hands down my favorite illustrator / designer / maker. He was an illustrator for the New York Times Sunday Styles column "Modern Love" and worked closely with Chris Silas Neal. Together they had some of the most stunning illustrations I have ever seen. The drawings were so loose and pure that I couldn't quit staring at them.

He also works with hand drawn typography a lot and installed a mural at the Joan Miro Foundation in Barcelona, Spain that explored visions and fears. I am particularly drawn to his honesty in his fear pieces. I am sure that we all share some of his fears and it's great to see someone unfiltered. Continue reading

Giveaway: Drawn In by Julia Rothman

If I were to envision Doodlers Anonymous as a published book, it would look damn close to the one I am about to give away.

Julia Rothman is an illustrator and pattern designer who runs the popular blog Book By Its Cover, which features a different art-related book every weekday. We've been fans of the site since day one and especially love the weekly sketchbook series.

Her latest book, Drawn In, is a peek into the inspiring sketchbooks of 44 fine artists, illustrators, graphic designers, and cartoonists. It's an incredible read, filled with insightful q&a and beautiful full-color photographs of sketchbook pages that were quite possibly never meant to be seen.

We are fans not only of the content, but because it features some of our favorite artists. Of the 44, at least 10 have been featured on Doodlers Anonymous, including the amazing Ted McGrath.

Friends of DA, we are giving this great book away. To be in the running, just leave a comment with the title of a book you bought because of its cover. We'll pick a winner from the hat. Comments close June 15th (Wednesday) at 2pm Eastern. Good luck everyone;...and for those of you that can't wait, get your hands on the book today. It deserves to be on your coffee table.

And the winner is: Robyn Wells. Congrats!

Something Will Happen

When asked, Irena Zablotska defines her work as "elegant horror." I must admit it's the perfect description. She draws beautiful, floating characters that all seem to be hiding something, and it leaves you with a complete sense of foreboding when you take to examine the drawing more.

Another favorite thing of mine, is her statement that among other (more obvious) things, she draws much of her inspiration "in dreams that have not come true."

Get lost in her work as I have, and you will soon find yourself quite the fan of this Ukrainian born illustrator who also goes by the name of joulu.
