Agony

Raffaele's Bafefit's biography describes the creatures in his portraits as "characters caught in between the thin line between life and death." This ceaseless purgatory, where even the smoothest of curves feel as sharp as Fugubiki knives, binds the personalities of each piece in a state of agony. And although you might not hear their caterwaul, you can certainly feel their desperation.

The Bravery

Born in Moscow, brought up in Milwaukee, and now based in Manhattan, Sonya Kozlova (at the early age of twenty) is known for her photography. Her photos are experimental and visceral, and it's obvious she has a keen eye for lighting and cropping her subjects just right.

She's recently mustered up the courage to share a few of her sketchbook drawings and they've captured my attention as much as her camera pictures have. Here are a few of my favorite pages.

Minimal Miju

I met Miju short after I moved to Barcelona through an exhibition at Duduá and I was blown away.

I don't really know how she does it, but in her drawings there is no noise, just peace. It's just her and her imaginary friends. It's so special and different from everything nowadays. When you meet her, you understand her illustrations are just an extension of her own personality.

Born in Busan (Korea), studied Product Design in Seoul and then moved to Barcelona to make a living out of her illustrations. She also has a trademark called Mee and Zoo where she sells handmade cushions from Busan.

And please, don't forget to check out her animated gifs.

Dark Splendor

A tear-shaped mountainous road in which to travel and wondrous beasts to encounter. I can't help but dream of adventures in the drawn world of Niclas Boman's imagination.

Buried In The Attic

Two years ago I waved hello (cyber-wave that is) to Caroline Gaedechens and asked her to please send over a few sketchbook pages. Then somehow I forgot all about it... until today! Thank you Gmail unlimited storage, you da-best.

I've never had an attic in my house, but I imagine this is what it feels like to have a spring-clean and find a treasure. A gentle, quiet, hand-drawn treasure in the attic.

Mr (not so) Frivolous

As I mentioned in a previous post I love art that combines realistic portraits and crazy colour schemes, and the work of Mr Frivolous definitely hits the spot there. But the thing that really interests me about his work is the text. It's almost like a personal graffiti he adds to his drawings, in amongst all the quotes he adds to each piece you'll often find personal notes or declarations scribbled down. I love the piece that has a corner ripped off with a note saying "this bit was crap so I ripped it off" in its place.

In a world where so much art looks virtually the same, it's work that has little bits of personality like that bursting from it that really stands out. I check back in at his website regularly to see if he's added any new pieces, and since Santa Claus is richer than I am I've bookmarked a few of his original drawings for my Christmas wishlist.

One Dollar Hotdog

"Jubilant" is a word I’d use to describe the drawings of Andrew Neyer. The Ohio-based illustrator is a wearer of many hats (including being the Art Director and Head Curator at Yes), and one of them is an illustrator. "One dollar hotdog" refers to the title of Andrew’s blogger, which is aptly named. His work is so satisfying (like a one dollar hotdog) and feels inclusive and unpretentious (it’s not like we’re eating foie gras here).

I love his character design. It's sweet, but not saccharine. The proportions are elongated but don’t feel strange. Everyone has an equal chance at happiness, including people, pets, and electronic devices.
