Skinny Dipping

Those long, limber bodies floating in black pencil - so beautiful. Move your nose in close to the screen, so you can notice the details. See that lady gently reach out for the ankles of another swimmer? Maybe she'd like to just hold on, close her eyes for a bit, feel the water rush past every inch of her skin. Gosh I'd love some warm ocean and a deserted beach right now!

This is my favourite drawing by Laura Geurten but she has other lovely pictures that deserve a peek, too.

Giveaway: 1000 Days of Drawing

I've never met another drawing madman like Chris Piascik. His sharpie must never leave his hand. On DA alone we've featured his work countless times and now again, for a compilation of one-thousand of his drawings. Every day, for many, many days now Chris has doodled something in the category of music, politics, bikes, characters, complaints, quotes or plain old improvised doodles.

I am going to give one of you this book. All you have to do is leave a comment below with something that you obsess over, like Chris obsesses over drawing. Share your addiction with the rest of us, and your name gets put in the hat. We'll randomly choose one of you in seven days. Comments close (end of day) July 16th, we'll draw the name the following day. Go on now, play along.

Release Me

There is no escape for the characters drawn by Dimas Forchetti. Each one is locked in by the roots of their own misfortune, as the lines twist, turn and intertwine with one another.

The Living Doodle: Turning Kid Drawings into Plush Toys

Heather and Tracy from Sunny Little Studio are bringing your kid's imagination to life by taking their flat 2D drawings and turning them into real-life plush toys. Just looking at some of their examples has re-kindled so much joy within me. Every creation is spontaneous and fun and the end result is some of the most creative plush toys I have ever seen. Wow... do I feel like a kid at a candy store.

Showcase #14: Egg Draw

In this season of artificial green cellophane and pastel hyperbole comes the kind of challenge you've been waiting for. Leave the bunnies and chicks to the chocolatiers and doodle up some savagely creative eggs. No theme. No constraints. Just you and a carton of (fragile) possibility. You can draw on one eggshell or a dozen, just make sure you only upload one photo.

I'd like to thank the fine folks at DrawTop for sponsoring this ridiculously cool drawing challenge. They make an awesome product by custom cutting adhesive vinyl whiteboards that you can stick practically anywhere, including the backs of electronic devices like laptops and iPads.

Click for prize and participation details. Deadline is Thursday, April 5th, so go on and get to showing off your drawing skills.

Doodle on friends.

Let's Get Nostalgic: President Doodles

I started doing a drawing a day back in November with some friends on instagram. It started as a way for me to challenge myself everyday with some repetition and also to get more comfortable with being less perfect. My process for this challenge is pretty simple… I just try to stretch myself with materials, subject matter, time constraints, etc. I have found a great love for working in collage and incorporating drawing, typography, and construction paper. Like I said it's a unique opportunity to break out of client work and explore materials and myself at the same time.

I often go to thrift stores looking for different things that I can use in pieces that I am making. I find pulling from the past and combining it with what I naturally do gives work a nostalgic feel that I love. On one adventure to some thrift stores I came across a Presidential Flashcard set from the late 70's. It came with fantastic renditions of presidents on the front and interesting facts on the back. I was immediately drawn to the period clothes, hair and grooming styles. Continue reading »

Between Tribes and Villages

Angela Fox is an artist based in Texas, with a very interesting style. Since I discovered her, she immediately caught my attention and made me think, what could be her inspiration to create such beautiful drawings and collages, what's the story behind her works? So having so many questions in my head I decided to talk a little bit with her and this is what she kindly told me: Read on »
