Handwritten Inspiration

inspirational typography doodle

Need a daily tonic of motivation? I highly recommend the works of Eugenia Clara, an Indonesian artist with a major in Engineering who says she makes possibly more than a thousand doodles per year. Not only is Clara’s bright lettering filled with inspirational phrases, but the idea of making a doodle out of whatever words are coming to your mind is great for filling up a blank page when your creative well is running dry. Her art is simple and consistent, yet filled with personal intimacy and liveliness that typography can sometimes lack. I formed odd little connections to the artist’s emotions with each piece because Clara’s images include blurbs (which sometimes get very detailed) about what she was feeling when she wrote it. It pulls me in to know why certain words or quotes occurred to the artist. Certainly a richer experience than seeing generic positivity without any human context, if you ask me.

Doodling with a purpose: How to create art that speaks

Those lines you just left on paper – are those really just doodles?

Could it be more than just meandering lines that you've mindlessly put together? Mindless not in the way it was created, but mindless in the way how easily our minds shifts from one thought to the next, perplexing, changing, evolving and never the same. Mindless in weight, in troubles and in spirit? A line that solidifies our constant state of flux, by being there – a constant. A reminder. A mark left in time that captures the essence of what makes drawing such a personal affair.

What happens beyond the meandering? At what point does a drawing become art? Or is every doodle a work of art in itself? I'd like to think it’s more the latter, but at the same time, sometimes not all doodles are made equal – sometimes it's nothing more than it is. And yet some are more than they truly show. An image, a still, captured in time. A thought. A fleeting emotion. Raw. Keep reading...

Giveaway: Nature Anatomy by Julia Rothman

If you don't know the work of Julia Rothman, you better get to it. I've been a fan of her work for as long as I can remember, from her lovely hand-drawn patterns to her sketchbook pages of intricate drawn buildings. She's also authored and illustrated some of my favorite books, like Drawn In and Hello NY. And now she's released another book to rival all the others.

Nature Anatomy is 224 pages of hand-drawn goodness and features tons of drawings, diagrams, and dissections from the natural world. Julia takes us on a visual tour of trees, birds, insects, animals, wildflowers, ecosystems, and so much more.

You'll want this book and we've got one to giveaway. To be in the running, just leave a comment on this blog post with your single favorite thing to draw from nature. We'll pick a random winner from the hat. Comments close July 6th (Monday) at 11am Eastern. Good luck everyone... and for those of you that can't wait, you can get your hands on the book today on Amazon.

UPDATE: We have a winner! We randomly pulled a name from the hat and... congrats to Catharine Mi-Sook! Your copy of the book will be mailed out this week. Enjoy and thank you all for participating.

Hop, Hop. Fashion, Baby.

Have you heard of Fifi Lapin? She's an international it-girl, style guru, and fashion icon who posts photos of her outfits online. She has collaborated with well-known designers who love her look and been featured in fashion magazines - even praised by Vogue as "an unlikely - but powerful - fashion force." What sets her apart from the rest of the fashionista world? Well, she’s an illustrated bunny.

Fifi Lapin's blog exists to answer the question, "What shall I wear today?" Most days she posts drawings of herself wearing opulently stylish outfits that she takes straight off the latest runways and red carpets. Fifi's posts sometimes include cute little updates on the globetrotting fashion adventures of a fabulously spoiled hare-ess. It’s a ridiculous and clever spin on fashion blogging! From now on, you’ll never want to read a blog that isn’t written by a rabbit again. (For the record, I am a Holland Lop and I am typing this with my fluffy paws.)

A Drawing Desk Like No Other

As a parent of two little doodlers and a daily drawer myself, I can't help but fall in love with this Kickstarter project by The Cardboard Guys. They've taken everything great about fostering creativity in a kid and magically created a drawing desk and chair made of cardboard, that's fun to build, functional to use, and best of all designed to be doodled all over. The top of the desk even comes with cubbies to store all your art supplies and built to close away when not in use.

No joke, I want one for myself. They've only got 8 days left to meet their Kickstarter goal. Support them (before it's too late) and little ones will rejoice everywhere.
