Doodles from the Dead

"I will probably doodle on the inside of my coffin."

That sums up the whole DA spirit, doesn’t it? When I stumbled across Operation Underwear’s blog and read that blurb, I knew I had found an artist I would need to write about. With Halloween approaching, there is no better time than now to meet his many merry monsters who are as wildly colorful as they are creepy. Alvaro Diaz-Rubio plays with character designs that spunky and spooky at the same time. The expressions in his doodles are always intense, too. Even in crowded group photos, no two creatures have the same face.

Eerie Pen and Pencil Portraits

My thoughts are haunted by these monochrome sketches ever since I first came across them. I can’t get the images of malformed humans with oversized and tangled anatomy out of my mind. This seemingly endless portrait series is drawn with childlike abandon by Daniel Williams. Despite the simplistic, smudgy style, each rough line is drawn with purpose. There are so many of these odd little people that I can’t help admiring the artist’s ability to dream up countless characters with their own story to tell. If I had seen one of these human oddities on their own, I don’t think it would have fascinated me as much as seeing the consistency between every single one of Williams’ huge portfolio of drawings. It’s a mysterious effect that leaves me simultaneously impressed and uneasy.

Inner Thoughts In Neon Pencil

Something eerie is happening. Ines Jakovljević's drawings are intensely personal and yet creepily inhuman. There's elements of biology textbook illustrations gone wrong, or gross-looking creatures found in the black depths of the sea. Enigmatic phrases are incorporated into the pictures, most of which sound to me like those nasty inner thoughts whispered to yourself in your head. These drawings have a bewitchingly sweet palette of vibrant neon and pastel colors, an unexpected choice for the gory visual details. I've been hooked and keep on diving deeper into Ines' color penciled inner world.

The Cute Creeps

Can't help loving the work of illustrator/artist Michael Sieben. His work ranges from commercial illustration, skateboard decks, posters and fine art. What's really stands out is his ability to create creepy yet cute characters. Almost an alternate reality that views life through a fun house mirror. Even when things get weird there is so much charm in the work that you can't help falling in love with the world.

An Illustrated Life

Aitch, an illustrator from Bucharest (suddenly I realize that I've recently only been talking about female artists)… describes her work as "ranges from pink, cute, elegant, to sometimes creepy, semi religious, bizarre characters, mixed in surrealistic sets" and I can't agree more. It's amazing how she moves from the "cute & pink" to the "surreal & semi-religious".

She normally works on paper, toys, urban objects, and many shops around Europe. She's one of my latest discoveries (and one of my favourites!).

I follow her on Facebook where the talks about her illustrated life.

Creatures from the Ground

I found some really crazy creatures today, and they all come from The Creepy Catacomb. The person that digs them up and serves them to us is Krysthopher Woods from Argentina. Well, I'm not sure if he's the one that digs them up, or if he's the one who buried them in the first place. Or maybe he just makes portraits of the creatures before they go on their last journey. So take a peak at these fine drawings and try not to feel the dirt the next time you go to bed.
