Tumblr of the Week: Oh, Rinji!

I came across a gorgeous blog filled with tons of drawings of these strange beings. They're drawn in ink and watercolor by an English teacher in Japan, who goes by ohrinji. I can't look away from the interesting color combinations, or the visually inventive characters and their surroundings. The color schemes, the contrast, the designs—I'm almost swooning.

April Spooks

I never wait until October to enjoy a good dose of spooky. This Italian artist's sketchbook is a small town of goofy monsters, all drawn in sepia pen. The bizarre creatures Paride Bertolin dreams up are scary in design, but the darkness became lighthearted after I noticed their awkward and playful expressions. I find it so endearing to see them looking gawky and stiff, like nervous new acquaintances or someone who hates having their picture taken. If the quirky and the macabre are right up your alley, go look at Bertolin’s sketchbook right now!

Coloring Book Interview Series, #12: Muxxi

Who are these strange little party animals? They're Muxxi's saccharine circus of colorful creatures inviting you to come play. Her illustration in our 4th Coloring Book is one of those pages that takes you by surprise as you're flipping through the book, especially if you aren't expecting a coloring page to be made of mostly black (I wasn't).

I poked her with a few curiosities about her friends with funny faces and candy colors, so come read the interview and join the festivities.

Sketching in Series

These sketchbooks are sending me on an adventure. I’m like a paleontologist unearthing gorgeous sea fossils… and… occasionally gorgeous girls. Partly a journal of zoological specimens and partly beauty magazine, Tavo Montańez’ meticulous black lines make it all come together so well I didn’t even question it. He inked up four entire sketchbooks full of cool spreads with his out of control doodling, you can scroll through the whole series on his site or see some of our favorites below.

Halloween Treat: Making Monsters

Chelsea Bloxsom makes monsters. She’s like Frankenstein stitching together frightening creatures, except hers are a lot more neon. What I love about her is that she posts doodles of her monstrous ideas before she takes them to the sewing table. Colorful, mischievous, and just a little bit spooky - it’s too fitting for an entry on Halloween. Visit her instagram or her website to see more of her creepy creations.

The Cute Creeps

Can't help loving the work of illustrator/artist Michael Sieben. His work ranges from commercial illustration, skateboard decks, posters and fine art. What's really stands out is his ability to create creepy yet cute characters. Almost an alternate reality that views life through a fun house mirror. Even when things get weird there is so much charm in the work that you can't help falling in love with the world.

Tumblr of the Week: Mr. Gentle

There's something slightly creepy about these drawings, but I can't quite put my finger on it (no pun intended). Maybe it's the Frankenstein-ish way the characters are composed with awkward and strange body parts that don't seem to belong together. Even so, they seem friendly enough to me. You might as well go visit this curious cast of creatures at Mr. Gentle's tumblr blog!
