The Biggest Doodle I've Ever Seen!

The title really says it all for this one! When my friend Maciej said he had a huge doodle to show me... well, my cheeks flushed a little and I began to think up a polite exit strategy. But the image he sent me was actually an ongoing doodle collage by illustrator Zach Johnsen. And yes, it is indeed huge and awesome!

For what seems like a long time now, Zach has been neatly collaging all of his drawings & rough sketches into one amazing continuous doodle. The length of this thing is amazing! I actually had time to reheat my mug of coffee in the microwave while I waited for the page to load. Go see what I mean... over here! click click!

Bonus round: For all my Where's Wally enthusiasts, here's a few special details that you can hunt for in Zach's crazy-big collage... best of luck!

Relentless Optimism

I stumbled upon Chad Kouri's work awhile ago through Will Bryant's website. I believe they had done a collaboration on a project and I was completely refreshed from the colors, textures, and style of Chad's work. I am particularly drawn to his wonderful collages and use of very minimal layouts with them. I read a quote somewhere that basically said it's not what is on the page, but what's not. When I look at Chad's work my mind is free to roam through each piece and create my own realities surrounding what it means, what it doesn't mean, etc..

Not only does he do amazing collage work but he also gets down with some mean hand drawn typography. I really love how he collaged his doodles, drawings, typographic designs and scrap pieces of paper for the Write Now: Artists and Letterforms. Whenever I can see an artists process it makes me feel pretty normal about all the things both internally and externally I go through to create a piece. Seeing the visual thought of working through a problem tends to inspire my process and shines new light on the directions I can take.

Between Tribes and Villages

Angela Fox is an artist based in Texas, with a very interesting style. Since I discovered her, she immediately caught my attention and made me think, what could be her inspiration to create such beautiful drawings and collages, what's the story behind her works? So having so many questions in my head I decided to talk a little bit with her and this is what she kindly told me: Read on »

Winning Drawings

A few weeks ago, we did a giveaway where I asked you guys to submit a quote that speaks of who you are. I picked two winners and drew them incorporating their quotes. Without further ado, I would like you to meet two friends of DA, Josh LaFayette and Ellie (aka comfits). Josh's "favorite hobby is breakfast." And Ellie is "like an octopus on roller skates."

Take a look at the process, from the initial pencil drawing to pen to watercolor and collage.

Josh and Ellie, check your mailboxes soon. I think I may now know your faces better than you do. :)

Soft Sharp Lines

Cella makes beautiful collage allegories that warm you up instantly. I can’t remember someone that made clean scissor lines so soft, like she does. Somehow she succeeded to erase all coldness from the collage technique and make her stories full of light and her creatures full of life. I would love to take one of her collages outside with me, on some nice meadow, and just watch how light and shadows reflects on it.

A Bit of an Embellishment

Bianca Green makes mundane objects look like the most beautiful thing you've ever seen. So much color, so dainty, so imperfect - I love them! Check out her Society6 store, goodies galore for sale!

No Need for a Clean-Up

One can tell that when Zé Otavio opens up his sketchbook, he holds nothing back. And that is exactly how a sketchbook should be used. His pages are layer upon layer of dirty, rough scratches, scribbles, tearings - you name it. I say we all open up our sketchbooks today and let ourselves go.
