It's National WHAT Day?

Did you know that April 14th was National High As You Can Reach Day? I can't believe I forgot, but hopefully I accidentally celebrated by reaching up at some point. I'll never miss an obscure holiday again now that I follow National What Day, a recently formed blog with a catchy idea. Last month, Thoka Maer moved from Berlin to New York and dove straight into appreciating American culture by doing something special for all of the national appreciation days. She posts almost-daily animated pencil drawings relevant to which National _____ Day it is. Whether it's pennies, pencils, or specific foods—I'm excited to see Maer's daily reminders to celebrate the little things!

Dark, Moody, and Moving Drawings

When I stare long enough at a drawing I love, I start to imagine it moving. Nancy Liang is one step ahead, she has already done it for me. I’m lost in her mysteriously moody series of animated gifs. She makes tons of them! The balance between motion and stillness creates an atmosphere the way a single frame on its own wouldn’t. The swaying trees, shifting shadows, and blinking lights fit so naturally, I feel they’re something I would have envisioned anyway if I saw a still drawing of her lonely scenes.

Animated GIFs Drawn with Pencil

Miranda Pfeiffer recently dropped me a line about her drawings and animated GIFs made with mechanical pencil. I like how she renders normal objects found in real life, but then adds a bit of quirkiness when going into her hand-drawn animations.

She really gets the process too, I love this description by her, "Because they are brief and only have a visual component, when a GIF is powerful, it’s done with economy and intelligence."

Superfantastic Animated GIFs

Ryan Todd has put together a cheery collection of animated GIFs for the holiday season. The complete showcase features submissions by illustrators, animators, and directors everywhere, and can be found online at christmasgifs.org.

If you know a thing or two about looping frames and have a love for the ho-ho-holidays, lucky for you, he's taking submissions, but he warns it better be good ;)

Stereographic Animated GIFs

This has been passed around the internet and deservedly so. Dain Fagerholm is taking static pen and marker drawings and making them twitch and wiggle to our delight. His characters seem to lift off the page in pseudo 3D. I honestly can't stop looking at them, someone please knock me out of this trance.

The Chest of Fun

In Paul Loubert's chest you will find all of your childhood stories and much more. All of your old video games could be there too.

It's a crazy world of palms and funny creatures and it could be really fun to see Paul's creatures animated. I already see them moving all over my walls in some funny pixel animations.
